JOE MAUER AND HANLEY RAMIREZ WIN BATTING TITLES,
WILL RECEIVE SILVER BAT AWARDS FROM LOUISVILLE SLUGGER
LOUISVILLE, KY – Joe Mauer of the Minnesota Twins won the batting title for the third time in the American League while Hanley Ramirez of the Florida Marlins won his first in the National League. Both players will receive the Silver Bat Award™ from Louisville Slugger® for their achievements in the 2009 Major League Baseball® season, the 60th anniversary of the Silver Bat Award. Louisville Slugger is the Official Bat of Major League Baseball.
Mauer hit .365 for the AL Central Division Champion Twins, a 37-point improvement over his American League leading .328 batting average in 2008. Ramirez, one of the game’s rising young stars, elevated his game to grab the senior circuit batting title by hitting .342.
Louisville Slugger’s Silver Bat Award is one of the most prestigious individual awards in sports. It is presented annually by Louisville Slugger to the batting champions in both the American League and National League. Louisville Slugger first presented the Silver Bat Award in 1949. George Kell of the Detroit Tigers and Jackie Robinson of the Brooklyn Dodgers were the first recipients.
The Silver Bat is silver plated in sterling and weighs approximately 56 ounces. It is 34 inches long and is engraved with the player’s autograph and the statistics from his batting title. An official from Louisville Slugger will present 2009 Silver Bat Awards to Joe Mauer and Hanley Ramirez at each player’s home stadium early in the 2010 season.

TO BE ANNOUNCED NOVEMBER 12 ON MLB NETWORK
MLB Network and Louisville Slugger will announce the winners of the 2009 Silver Slugger Awards™ in a special hour long telecast at 6:00 p.m. ET on November 12. Silver Sluggers are presented to the best offensive producers at each position in the American and National Leagues. The winners are determined by a secret ballot of Major League Baseball managers and coaches.
