LOUISVILLE, KY (August 16, 2011) – Jim Thome is a throwback – a big man who swings a big bat.  He crushed his 599 and 600 career home runs with his maple M356 Louisville Slugger last night in Detroit.

“The big barrel model Thome uses was built for Edgar Martinez in 1995.  Jim swung a
34-1/2 inch long, 32 ounce, black M9 Maple Louisville Slugger to accomplish his historic achievement, ” said the company’s Manager of Professional Baseball Chuck Schupp.

Thome is the eighth player in Major League Baseball history to reach 600 career homeruns.  Five of those eight, including Thome, signed contracts with Louisville Slugger, while the other three players swung Louisville Slugger bats most of their careers.

“Over time Louisville Slugger proves why it is synonymous with baseball and baseball bats,” Schupp said.  “No other baseball equipment company even comes close to the achievements set with Louisville Slugger bats over the history of baseball. And we truly appreciate that we have earned Jim Thome’s trust.”

In addition to Thome, 600 Home Run Club members Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Ken Griffey, Jr., and Alex Rodriguez have all been under bat contracts with Louisville Slugger, celebrating its 127th year in professional baseball this season.

“It’s an honor for Louisville Slugger to be so woven into the fabric of baseball,” Schupp said. “We work daily to build the best bat and earn the trust of the majority of big league players.  Our goal is to create history with our bats every season.”

Fans can own a piece of Jim Thome’s historic achievement.  A special commemorative Jim Thome 600 Home Run and career highlights Louisville Slugger bat is available for $129.95 at www.BigTimeBats.com. Only 600 are available.
